The Elena+ app was inspired by Elena, an Italian nurse that went viral in her valiant efforts to tackle COVID-19 coronavirus and help alleviate the suffering of patients. In honor of her, and of all medical staff and carers all over the world, a group of researchers in digital and behavioral health at different universities internationally came together to discuss how they could contribute in this time of crisis. From these discussions the app Elena+ was born; aiming to help individuals cope during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, delivering “pandemic lifestyle care” to the general population with tips related to their mental health, physical activity and COVID-19 information, amongst other health and lifestyle topics.
Data Collection and Usage
The following anonymized data, i.e. data that cannot be traced back to the individual user, will be collected and used to better understand the COVID-19 pandemic and to improve the Elena+ app (e.g. in scientific articles or publicly accessible in databases provided there are no legal, ethical, copyright or other issues): (a) app usage data (e.g. time and date of interactions) (b) conversation choices stored in variables for personalizing the conversation (c) subjective ratings of questionnaire items etc. Any data transfer between the app and the database will be encrypted to ensure privacy and security. The data will be stored in a secure database located in Europe. For this purpose, a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant infrastructure is used, i.e. in full accordance with legal requirements.
